El Altazar Reservoir Community is formed by all the coastal municipalities of El Atazar dam: El AtazarEl BerruecoCervera de BuitragoPatonesPuentes Viejas (formed by the following population cores: Cinco VillasMagirónSerrada de la FuenteParedes de Buitrago) and Robledillo de la Jara.

All together decided to join in April 2000, forming this Commynity, to pool together their interests making a strong commitment by the tourism as an engine for development of the area.

Located in the Lozoya’s Lower Valley, El Altazar Reservoir Community represents one of the most differentiated sub-regions inside Madrid’s North Mountain Range, where the Lozoya River and its waters turn into a resource of great importance.

The numerous hydraulic infrastructures, dams, canals, etc… existent in the area are the accurate reflex of the importance of water as an economic and natural resource. This essential element and more limited by the day, is found in abundance in the great reservoirs of: Puentes Viejas, El Villar and El Atazar. Its impressive infrastructure, which are among the most important in Europe, hold the largest reserves of water in Madrid and lend a heritage that distinguishes the region, with its interesting plant and animal diversity, beautifying the landscape and offering a unique setting for sport and leisure, covirtiéndose in "small inland seas".

Besides the numerous activities they can perform on the nature, the visit to a this province must be complete knowing:
 
  • Within the cultral, the network of museums that are part of the Territory Museum.
  • Senda del Genaro: circular route that skirts El Atazar dam, of 60 Km and joins the six peoples.



 
 
 

El embalse / Reservoir

La construcción de la presa del Atazar se inició en 1965 y fue terminada en diciembre de 1971, inaugurándose en abril de 1972. El diseño de la presa supuso un auténtico alarde técnico en la época, fue la primera bóveda de doble curvatura construida en todo el mundo. De 124,6 metros de altura sobre el cauce. El espesor en la base del muro es de 43 metros y en su parte superior de 7 metros.Actualmente además de cumplir sus funciones de abastecimiento de agua y energía hidroeléctrica, el embalse tiene permitida la navegación de embarcaciones sin motor.The construction of the Atazar dam began in 1965 and was completed in December of 1971 it was inaugurated in April 1972. The design of the dam was an authentic technical display of the era, it was the first double curvature concrete arch buttress built in the world. It has a height of 124,6 meters over the water course. The thickness of the wall’s base is 43 meters and in the highest part 7 meters.Nowadays besides fulfilling its water supply and energetic functions the reservoir has an allowed navigation of no motor boats.
